“Olympic Program Undergoes Major Review for Future Success”

Change is on the horizon for the Olympic sports program, and according to IOC president Kirsty Coventry, it may cause discomfort for some individuals. Coventry, the first female leader in the 130-year history of the Olympic Games, emphasized the need for a thorough review of the more than 450 medal events across various sports federations at both the Summer and Winter Games.

“We must be transparent about what is effective and, perhaps more importantly, what is not,” Coventry stated at the International Olympic Committee annual meeting preceding the Milan Cortina Olympics opening ceremony. She highlighted the necessity of reevaluating sports, disciplines, and events to ensure they align with the current era. “We will encounter challenging decisions and discussions – this is an integral part of the process,” Coventry added. “While these conversations may be uncomfortable, they are crucial for maintaining the Games’ strength for future generations.”

The Summer Games has been targeting younger audiences by incorporating urban sports like skateboarding and 3-on-3 basketball in recent years, with breakdancing making its debut in Paris 18 months ago. Coventry stressed the importance of keeping the Games appealing to youth worldwide, reflecting their values, authenticity, and pursuit of genuine experiences.

Balancing tradition and innovation is essential, Coventry noted, which could potentially impact sports with a long Olympic history, such as modern pentathlon, as they navigate towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The outcomes of the Olympic program review, part of Coventry’s “Fit For The Future” initiative, will be revealed later this year.

In addition to focusing on sports rather than engaging in politics, Coventry aims to uphold Olympic values, including diversity and inclusion. She emphasized the strength found in diversity and highlighted the importance of supporting projects related to health, inclusion, and education within the IOC’s framework.

The IOC’s core priority, Coventry underscored, is sports, acknowledging the significance of understanding politics while emphasizing the organization’s primary role in the sporting realm. As the LA Summer Games draw closer, many are anticipating Coventry’s first meeting with United States President Donald Trump.
