“Canada’s Eerie Bookshops: A Spooky Literary Haven”

To be recognized as one of Canada’s most eerie bookshops, a diverse collection of horror literature is essential. However, the haunting ambiance of a bookstore goes beyond just the genre it offers. Rare and vintage books carry a peculiar sense of nostalgia, preserving remnants of bygone eras. Moreover, bookstores housing spell-casting tomes, divination guides, and ritualistic texts also contribute to their spooky allure.

While not all independent establishments featured on this list exclusively focus on horror literature, each provides a creative hub for community interactions. These bookstores serve as meeting spots for readers and writers, where unfinished narratives are discussed, local authors showcase their works, and both literal and metaphorical tea is shared.

Here are six of Canada’s most eerie bookshops, characterized by their unique atmospheres, distinctive personalities, and strong ties to local culture.

Nocturne Books, Calgary

The inspiration behind the establishment of Nocturne Books in Calgary can be summed up in two words by its owner, Scott Ross-Molyneux: “my wife.” Describing themselves as the quintessential “goth girlfriend, golden retriever boyfriend” duo, Ross-Molyneux and co-owner Alliye Iriye embarked on this venture driven by their shared passion for horror literature and cinema.

Nocturne Books’ shelves reflect Iriye’s penchant for the macabre, showcasing works that delve into the darkest realms of storytelling. One notable example is Agustina Bazterrica’s Tender Is the Flesh, a dystopian narrative exploring a world where cannibalism is legalized due to the inedibility of animal meat. Iriye’s criterion for a great read? Feeling utterly devastated while immersed in the story.

Ross-Molyneux’s personal favorites include Calgary-based author Craig DiLouie’s chilling novel Episode Thirteen. A serendipitous encounter occurred when DiLouie visited Nocturne on its opening day and stumbled upon his own works on display, emphasizing the close-knit relationship the store fosters with local creatives. Nocturne hosts various author events, runs a program for self-published and emerging writers, and is set to launch horror and thriller book clubs.

Raven’s End Books, Winnipeg

Seeking to curate a more specialized selection than typical chain bookstores, Chelsea McKee-Trenchard established Raven’s End Books in Winnipeg. This store prioritizes works from smaller publishers and lesser-known authors, featuring dedicated sections for body horror, queer narratives, and Indigenous storytelling. Additionally, it hosts a variety of events, including craft nights, a Silent Reading Club, queer book clubs, tarot sessions, and local vendor showcases.
