A powerful tornado hit the village of Pomas in southern France, causing extensive damage to over 300 homes and injuring dozens of people. Fortunately, no individuals have been reported missing in the aftermath of the disaster. As of Tuesday morning, 1,400 households in the area were still without electricity, according to the Aude prefecture.
Images captured from social media videos, verified by Reuters, show the tornado swirling over the village of Verzeille, located just east of Pomas. Many homes along its path suffered broken windows as the tornado tore through the region. Subsequently, the destructive force of the tornado reached Preixan, a few kilometers north of Pomas.
Residents are now faced with the daunting task of assessing the damage and initiating cleanup efforts. In Pomas, a man is pictured surveying the wreckage of a damaged house, while debris litters the floor of the Saint Julien et Sainte Basilisse church following the collapse of its roof. Fallen trees in a cemetery and individuals covering damaged roofs with tarps are evident signs of the aftermath. Pedestrians navigate around a fallen tree near damaged homes, showcasing the impact of the tornado on the community.
