“Québec Premier Shuffles Cabinet Amid Leadership Race”

Premier François Legault has made changes to his cabinet lineup, assigning new roles to key ministers. Benoit Charette has been tasked with overseeing the environment portfolio, in addition to his existing infrastructure responsibilities. Meanwhile, Jean Boulet will now be in charge of the economy and energy sectors alongside his current role overseeing labor affairs.

These adjustments come in light of the leadership race within the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party. As per the rules of the leadership contest, candidates must step down from their ministerial positions to pursue their bids for leadership. Legault himself announced his resignation as the premier and CAQ leader on Jan. 14, prompting the need for these reassignments.

Two contenders have emerged to succeed Legault: Christine Fréchette, the former minister of economy, innovation, and energy, and Bernard Drainville, who previously held responsibilities for the environment, climate change, wildlife, and parks.
