Quebec provincial authorities are currently looking into the deaths of a man and a woman discovered deceased at their residence in the Atikamekw community of Manawan. The bodies of a 44-year-old male and a 39-year-old female were located by officers on Cikobi Street on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed by Marc Tessier, a spokesperson for Sûreté du Québec. While the major crimes unit of the SQ is actively investigating the incident, official statements suggest the case is likely a murder-suicide, although conclusive evidence is still pending.
Investigators from the SQ revisited the residence on Monday to collect additional evidence. The Atikamekw council of Manawan has affirmed its collaboration with the ongoing investigation. Grand Chief Constant Awashish of the Atikamekw Nation has announced the provision of psychological support for community members in need, emphasizing the collective impact of such tragedies on the community.
In response to the distressing events, the Awacak Okiskinohamatowikamikowaw Elementary School and Otapi High School were closed on Monday. Chief Sipi Flamand expressed the community’s shared sense of mourning, calling for unity and resilience during these challenging times. The council has also informed residents about accessing support services via Onikam social services by dialing 819-971-1919.
