Camp Mystic has decided to halt its plans to reopen this summer on the Texas river following a tragic incident where 25 girls and two teenage counsellors lost their lives due to floodwaters. The camp, under scrutiny for safety and operational deficiencies, faced strong opposition from affected families and ongoing investigations.
The camp’s change of heart came after extensive court hearings and legislative probes revealed serious shortcomings in its emergency preparedness, inadequate staff training, and delays in executing evacuation procedures during the flood that struck on July 4. The owner of the camp, Dick Eastland, also perished in the disaster.
Initially, the Eastland family had assured state lawmakers that the camp would be operational by May 30, accommodating nearly 900 campers. However, a sudden turn of events occurred on Thursday when Camp Mystic withdrew its application for a license renewal for 2026, citing the need to prioritize the grieving process for affected families and the completion of ongoing investigations.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick commended the decision, emphasizing the importance of ensuring thorough investigations before considering the camp’s reopening. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott highlighted that the findings from the investigations by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Rangers would be disclosed promptly.
The families of the victims, who attended the court and legislative hearings wearing “Heaven’s 27” pins in memory of their loved ones, listened to harrowing accounts of the tragedy, including missed warning signs and delayed evacuation efforts. Edward Eastland, one of the camp directors, publicly apologized to the families, acknowledging the camp’s shortcomings in handling the emergency.
Despite Camp Mystic’s efforts to demonstrate readiness for the upcoming season, state regulators identified significant deficiencies in its emergency operations plan, prompting concerns about safety protocols and preparedness. The camp’s determination to open was met with skepticism, particularly after revelations of systemic issues and lapses in safety measures.
