Stellato-Dudek, at 42, was poised to be the oldest female figure skater in almost a century to compete at the Olympics. However, a training mishap in Quebec jeopardized her participation in the Milan Cortina Games. She and Deschamps have withdrawn from the team event starting Friday, but Stellato-Dudek’s status for the individual pairs event on Feb. 15-16 remains uncertain.
Skate Canada’s high-performance director, Mike Slipchuk, mentioned that a final decision on Stellato-Dudek’s participation is expected by Feb. 10. This timeline aims to allow sufficient time for travel arrangements and potential replacements if needed.
Meanwhile, Pereira and Michaud, who recently won their first national title in Gatineau, Quebec, will represent Canada in the pairs segment of the team event. Madeline Schizas, the lone entry in women’s singles for Canada, described Stellato-Dudek’s situation as a nightmare for any athlete.
Despite the setback, fellow skaters expressed support and confidence in Pereira and Michaud, highlighting their readiness for the Olympic experience. The competition is expected to be fierce, with multiple countries vying for top spots in the team event.
