British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged on Thursday to mobilize the full force of the state in the fight against antisemitism. However, his commitment was met with criticism following a series of arson attacks and a double stabbing targeting Jewish communities the previous day. Starmer’s administration has allocated £25 million for increased police patrols and security measures around synagogues, schools, and community centers. During a visit to Golders Green, the scene of the stabbings that injured two individuals, Starmer encountered protesters holding signs with derogatory messages. The neighborhood in north London is a central hub for the country’s Jewish population, estimated at around 300,000 people. Starmer condemned the attack as a violation of British principles and later addressed the nation from 10 Downing Street.
In a separate statement, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood characterized antisemitism as a pressing security concern, declaring it an “emergency.” The police have apprehended a 45-year-old suspect on charges of attempted murder and labeled the incident as terrorism. The individual, with a history of violence and mental health issues, had been previously referred to the government’s Prevent program in 2020. Starmer, responding to inquiries, emphasized the need for a thorough review of the Prevent initiative to enhance its effectiveness.
The Jewish community in Britain has been increasingly targeted following the 2023 attacks on Israel by Hamas-led groups and subsequent military actions. Recent incidents, including arson attacks on synagogues and violent assaults, have heightened tensions. Authorities have made arrests in connection with these attacks, with some individuals facing charges. The surge in hostility has sparked debates on the regulation of pro-Palestinian rallies, with some calling for temporary bans. Starmer underscored the importance of free speech but cautioned against behaviors inciting violence or promoting terrorism. He firmly condemned any form of racism, particularly in the context of recent events.
An online group claimed responsibility for the stabbings under the name Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, prompting authorities to investigate the authenticity of the claim. The same group has purportedly been linked to previous arson attacks, although experts caution against viewing it as a cohesive organization. Allegations have surfaced regarding Iran’s involvement in orchestrating attacks on European soil, targeting media outlets and the Jewish community. The U.K.’s domestic intelligence service, MI5, disclosed the disruption of over 20 Iran-linked plots in the past year. Metropolitan Police chief Mark Rowley highlighted the influence of external actors in inciting violence within the country.
