Approximately 30 WestJet flight attendants staged a demonstration outside Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Sunday after a nationwide strike was initiated due to failed contract talks between the airline and the union. By 1:30 p.m. AT, all WestJet flights in and out of Halifax were canceled, leaving numerous passengers stranded. Ed and Ann Meehan, visitors from the UK, found themselves sleeping on the airport floor after their flight was repeatedly rescheduled and then canceled. They eventually decided to book a different flight, which included an extended layover in Iceland on their journey back home, stating that this experience has tarnished their perception of Canada.
Ryan Callbeck, another traveler, faced similar challenges when his flight to Regina was called off, leaving him and a group of eight with no proper assistance as the customer service line kept disconnecting. Despite sympathizing with the flight attendants’ cause, Callbeck expressed disappointment at the unexpected disruptions to their plans and the additional costs incurred. Across the country, 4,287 WestJet flight attendants went on strike over wage disparities and working conditions, with the union highlighting issues of inadequate compensation and unpaid tasks. WestJet assured affected passengers of refunds or alternative arrangements as necessary.
Halifax Stanfield International Airport authorities advised individuals holding WestJet bookings over the next three days to verify their flight status online before heading to the airport.
