A U.S. naval aircraft shot down an Iranian drone that was approaching the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, according to U.S. Central Command on Tuesday. The incident occurred as tensions rise, with the Trump administration hinting at potential military action to push Iran into negotiations.
The drone exhibited aggressive behavior towards the aircraft carrier and continued its approach despite attempts by U.S. forces to de-escalate the situation in international waters, stated Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins. Shortly before this incident, Iranian forces reportedly harassed a U.S.-flagged merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The shooting down of the Shahed-139 drone by an F-35C fighter jet from the USS Abraham Lincoln took place around 800 kilometers off Iran’s southern coast. No U.S. personnel were injured, and no equipment was damaged during the interception.
Following the drone incident, Revolutionary Guard forces reportedly harassed the Stena Imperative merchant ship. Two boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone approached the vessel at high speeds, threatening to board and seize it. The USS McFaul responded, providing defensive air support from the U.S. Air Force, ensuring the safe passage of the merchant vessel.
Talks between special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian officials are still on the agenda, as confirmed by both the White House and Iranian representatives. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed willingness to engage in fair negotiations with the U.S., indicating Tehran’s interest in dialogue. Plans for the talks, including potential host countries like Turkey and Oman, are still being discussed.
