The Canadian government has allocated $200 million for a Canadian-owned launch pad dedicated to launching satellites into orbit. This investment is part of Ottawa’s 10-year plan to secure a space launch pad on the East Coast, a critical capability outlined in the government’s new defence industrial strategy.
Currently, Canada relies on the United States to launch its space projects as it lacks the infrastructure for independent launches. The new launch pad is projected to be operational by 2028, reducing Canada’s dependence on external partners for space missions.
Defence Minister David McGuinty unveiled the initiative at a Canadian Space Agency facility in the capital, emphasizing the importance of satellite technology in various sectors of the Canadian economy, such as banking and telecommunications. McGuinty highlighted the need for greater sovereignty and security in the country’s space activities.
The government aims to enhance its launch capabilities by joining the NATO Starlift initiative, enabling rapid deployment of payloads into space. Maritime Launch Services, based in Halifax, is overseeing the development of Spaceport Nova Scotia near Canso, N.S., with CEO Stephen Matier noting that the federal contract signals significant progress for the spaceport project.
The move towards establishing a sovereign launch capability marks a significant advancement for Canada, reducing the reliance on costly external launch services like those provided by Space X. The construction of a commercial spaceport in Nova Scotia is expected to enhance Canada’s presence in the space industry, creating opportunities for economic growth and technological advancement.
The initiative aligns with the government’s strategy to bolster the domestic defence industry, with a specific focus on enhancing Canada’s space capabilities. The 2025 budget has allocated $183 million over the next three years to support the establishment of sovereign space launch infrastructure, aiming to strengthen Canada’s position in the evolving space sector.
