“University of Guelph Investigates Hate Symbols at Pub Night”

The University of Guelph is currently conducting an investigation following a recent pub night where students used discriminatory language and displayed symbols of hate. The Student Federation of the Ontario Agricultural College revealed that the incident occurred during an Aggie Pub night themed as graffiti night, where students wore white shirts and had graffiti painted on them by others.

In response to the situation, the student federation emphasized the importance of upholding respect, accountability, and inclusion within the student community. They encouraged students to speak out, support each other, and demonstrate empathy in their actions. The federation denounced discrimination and hate, stating they have no place at the Ontario Agricultural College, as they undermine individuals’ well-being and the sense of safety and belonging for all students.

An Instagram comment on the federation’s statement highlighted that swastikas were among the symbols painted on some shirts during the event. The university has activated its protocols for handling “hate or bias-motivated incidents,” with the Ontario Agricultural College taking steps to ensure appropriate measures are implemented.

In an email communication to staff, faculty, and students, the University of Guelph expressed deep concern over the incident and affirmed a zero-tolerance policy towards hate. The university also confirmed the suspension of future similar events while the investigation is ongoing.

According to a statement provided to CBC News, the university is prepared to address policy violations and enforce consequences under the student rights and responsibilities policy. Efforts are being made to engage student leaders and campus partners to reinforce expectations and enhance education on equity, inclusion, and respectful behavior within the community.

Students affected by the event have been encouraged to access support services through various available on-campus resources. Additionally, the Guelph Police Service has confirmed its involvement in the investigation and is collaborating with the University of Guelph to address the matter.
