RCMP officials in Kinngait have confirmed that the bodies of two missing fishermen, a father aged 70 and his 38-year-old son, have been discovered. The men were reported missing on New Year’s Eve after failing to return home from checking their nets near the community, located 15 kilometers away. Due to inclement weather conditions, a ground search was initially delayed. However, search teams eventually located the men’s snowmobile about 11 kilometers from Kinngait, but the men were not with it.
After further efforts, on January 2nd, searchers located the deceased individuals approximately five kilometers from Kinngait. The RCMP has chosen not to disclose the identities of the deceased fishermen or the circumstances surrounding their deaths at this time. They have indicated that no foul play is suspected, leading to the conclusion of their investigation. The Nunavut Coroner’s Service has taken over the case for further examination.
