“Fallen Hamilton Soldier Honored with Solemn Burial”

Dozens of individuals gathered at Woodland Cemetery on Monday for the interment of Sebastian Halmagean, a 24-year-old Hamilton soldier who passed away in Latvia last month. The Department of National Defence (DND) of Canada confirmed his demise near the Latvian capital of Riga on January 29, with investigations ongoing into the circumstances of his death.

At the burial site in Woodland Cemetery, where Hamilton converges with Burlington, Ontario, law enforcement officials were present, managing the influx of visitors due to the full parking situation. Just before noon, Halmagean’s flag-covered casket was brought into the cemetery by an army vehicle, escorted by numerous uniformed soldiers.

A group of soldiers, acting as pallbearers, retrieved the casket from the vehicle, lifted it onto their shoulders, and solemnly transported it across a snow-covered field to the gravesite. The tribute to Halmagean included a 21-gun salute, followed by a rendition of “Amazing Grace” by a bagpiper.

Concluding the brief ceremony, the flag adorning Halmagean’s casket was ceremonially folded and presented to his immediate family members seated nearby. Prior to this, Halmagean’s family had hosted friends at the Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home Ancaster Chapel on Sunday, expressing deep gratitude for the support received during their challenging period.

Halmagean’s flag-draped casket arrived at Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Ontario on February 3. The late soldier, who was on his inaugural deployment, was described by his father, Alin Halmagean, as finding fulfillment in his role as a gunner stationed at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick. Sebastian had previously assisted in firefighting efforts in Newfoundland and Labrador, showcasing pride in aiding fellow Canadians in times of need.

Hamilton East-Stoney Creek MP Ned Kuruc shared sentiments of sorrow over Halmagean’s passing, labeling it a “tragedy” for the Stoney Creek community. Kuruc, who had personal connections with the family and had known Sebastian since childhood, praised the young soldier’s vibrancy and intelligence.
