The Southern Alberta Mustangs, a junior hockey team in southern Alberta, tragically lost three players in a fatal car crash while en route to a practice session. The team, part of the United States Premier Hockey League and based in Stavely, Alberta, confirmed the devastating news on social media, expressing profound sorrow for the loss of the young men who were not only teammates but also cherished members of their community. The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 2 and 55th Avenue, involving a collision between a semi-truck carrying gravel and a small passenger vehicle. The three occupants of the car, two 18-year-olds from Kamloops, B.C., and a 17-year-old from Alabama, were pronounced dead at the scene, while the truck driver, a 40-year-old resident of Stavely, sustained minor injuries. The local authorities, including the Claresholm RCMP, are actively investigating the incident. Stavely, located approximately 115 kilometers south of Calgary, is where the tragic collision took place. The USPHL team is cooperating with the authorities and providing support to their players, staff, and families during this difficult time. The USPHL league, which consists of over 150 teams across various divisions, welcomed the Mustangs as one of the five new Alberta-based teams in the Premier Conference for the 2025-26 season, marking their first year in the league alongside the Bassano Beavers, Three Hills Titans, Hanna Havoc, and Diamond Valley Rockies.
