A significant gathering of protesters caused disruptions in the downtown area on Sunday in support of demonstrators in Iran who are protesting against the nation’s economic crisis and its governing regime. The protests in Iran began on December 28 due to escalating prices and evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations challenging the clerical leadership that has ruled the country for almost five decades.
Simultaneously, a large number of pro-government supporters have rallied to counter the protests, demonstrating their backing for the theocratic authority that protesters are contesting. Pooria Shafia, an Iranian-Canadian participant in the Toronto protest, expressed concerns about his relatives residing in Iran, highlighting the anxiety and uncertainty faced by individuals with ties to the ongoing turmoil in the country.
The Toronto protest, advocating for democratic elections in Iran, drew “well over 100,000 demonstrators,” according to the Toronto Police. The event, which commenced from Sankofa Square and proceeded to Queen’s Park, also called for action from the Canadian government to weaken the Iranian regime, expel officials linked to the Islamic Republic in Canada, and prevent negotiations between the theocracy and UN members.
Amid the protests, there have been reports of a significant number of detentions and casualties in Iran, with over 49,500 people reportedly detained and at least 6,713 fatalities, predominantly among demonstrators. The exact figures remain unverified as Iranian authorities have restricted internet access, hindering independent assessment by external sources.
While the death toll continues to escalate, Iranians in the diaspora, including individuals in Canada, are striving to amplify the voices of the Iranian people and draw attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in their homeland. Encouraging non-Iranians to join the cause, protesters emphasize the importance of standing up for universal human rights and solidarity in the face of oppression.
