The airline’s crew, represented by CUPE Local 8125, recently voted in favor of a strike, with a potential walk-off date set for August 2. Alia Hussain, president of CUPE 8125, commended WestJet’s decision to provide passengers with options for changes, emphasizing the importance of flexibility for travelers affected by the labor dispute. While the airline’s action does not confirm an imminent strike, Hussain praised it as a responsible measure expected from any business facing such circumstances. WestJet had previously dealt with a significant labor dispute in 2024 when unionized airline mechanics staged a strike over the Canada Day weekend, impacting a large number of travelers.
