The Winter Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina witnessed the debut of ski mountaineering, with Marianne Fatton of Switzerland claiming the first-ever gold medal in the sport. Fatton conquered the challenging course, featuring uphill and downhill sections, in a time of 2 minutes and 59.77 seconds. She triumphed over Emily Harrop of France by 2.38 seconds, while Ana Alonso Rodriguez of Spain secured the bronze despite competing with a torn ACL.
Expressing her joy, Fatton, the reigning world champion, described the day as magical and historic for the athletes. In the men’s race, Oriol Cardona Coll of Spain emerged victorious, with Nikita Filippov earning the silver and Thibault Anselmet of France clinching the bronze.
Ski mountaineering, also known as “skimo,” was included in the Olympic program in 2021, adding a unique Alpine sport to the Games’ lineup. The falling snow provided a picturesque backdrop for the niche sport, which dates back to the late 19th century. The gold medals held significant importance for both Fatton and Cardona Coll as the first champions in their respective categories.
Despite the pressure, the athletes delivered thrilling performances, showcasing their endurance and skills on the challenging course. The event concluded with the promise of a mixed team relay on the upcoming Saturday, adding another exciting chapter to the ski mountaineering debut at the Winter Olympics.
