“Summerside East-West Housing Corridor Completion Delayed”

Barriers have been set up and the installation of lights is currently in progress along the East-West Housing Corridor in Summerside. The project, which was included in the city’s budget for 2022, was initially projected to be operational by Christmas. However, Chief Administrative Officer JP Desrosiers explained that adverse weather conditions and a delay in the delivery of light poles caused the delay in the opening.

Due to inclement weather and the delayed arrival of the light poles, the installation process was hindered. Desrosiers mentioned that the light poles arrived in mid to early December, but challenges arose due to high winds and cold temperatures during installation. Consequently, the anticipated opening of the corridor has been rescheduled to the end of the month or the beginning of February.

The East-West Housing Corridor will link Water Street East with MacEwan Road and Ryan Street, providing direct access to approximately 140 hectares of land. This 2.2-kilometer road is designed to redirect traffic away from the city center towards the mall district on Granville Street.

Apart from weather-related setbacks and light pole delays, the completion of the corridor faced additional obstacles. Desrosiers highlighted that the city had been in negotiations with landowners impacted by the project for several years, as not all were initially supportive. In some cases, expropriation was necessary to move forward with the project, despite the city’s reluctance.

The concept of an east-west connector road has been in development for many years, with an initial version presented to the city council in 2001. Desrosiers expressed his excitement about the forthcoming completion of the project and the positive impact it will have on the community.

Mitch Martin, the Executive Director of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce, echoed the enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing that improved access to affordable housing is crucial for fostering residential and commercial growth in Summerside. Martin stressed the importance of providing access to both employment opportunities and amenities to support the growing residential population.

Desrosiers reassured that the project is on track with the budget, and no further delays are anticipated as long as weather conditions cooperate. Additionally, preparations are in place for road clearing prior to the official opening to ensure safe access for drivers.
