“Rugby Returns to Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games”

Rugby enthusiasts and leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador are excited as the sport makes a comeback at the upcoming Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in August. The event, scheduled for August 8-15 in Corner Brook, marks a significant milestone for the province’s rugby community, offering young athletes a valuable competitive experience.

Morgan Lovell, the technical director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Rugby Union, expressed enthusiasm about the return of rugby to the Games after a long absence. He highlighted the opportunity for around 100 male and female youths to participate in a recognized multi-sport competition, providing them with a unique sporting experience.

The reintroduction of rugby at the Summer Games aligns with the current success of rugby in Canada, as evidenced by the Canadian national women’s rugby sevens team securing a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Additionally, the recent inclusion of rugby sevens at the Canada Games in St. John’s has further boosted interest in the sport.

In preparation for the upcoming Games, Lovell, along with coaches and local players, is actively working to expand rugby’s presence on Newfoundland’s west coast. Initiatives such as coaching clinics and player sessions aim to introduce youth aged 14-16 to the sport, potentially paving the way for their participation in the Summer Games.

Corner Brook rugby player Samantha Pomroy emphasized the community-building aspect of rugby and the opportunity it presents for individuals to explore a new sport. Similarly, longtime rugby player Steve Best shared his passion for the sport and the unique camaraderie it fosters among players.

Having last featured in the Games in 2000, rugby’s return has generated excitement among players and fans alike. Best highlighted the enduring appeal of rugby and the sense of camaraderie it offers, making it a standout choice among various sporting options.

As the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games approach, the rugby community looks forward to welcoming more participants and fostering a culture of inclusivity and sportsmanship within the sport.
