“International 500 Snowmobile Race Sparks Canadian Attendance Concerns”

The upcoming International 500 Snowmobile Race in the Sault Ste. Marie area is sparking conversations about Canadian participation this year. The event, known for drawing large crowds to Sault Michigan for a week of thrilling racing and entertainment, culminates in the 57th edition of a 500-mile snowmobile race on a one-mile ice oval track.

With top speeds reaching 120 miles per hour, the race has earned the moniker “NASCAR on ice” and attracted around 6,900 spectators last year, marking one of the largest turnouts in the race’s history. However, ongoing political and trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. have led to reduced Canadian travel and decreased traffic on the Sault’s International Bridge.

Ryan Kostanowicz, the Canadian liaison on the I-500 Board of Directors, emphasized the significant contribution of Canadian volunteers and supporters to the event’s success. While uncertainties linger about Canadian attendance this year, Kostanowicz remains optimistic, highlighting the international collaboration that underpins the race.

Despite facing criticism from some Ontario Sault residents over supporting an American-centric event, Kostanowicz stressed the longstanding partnership between the “twin Saults” and the shared economic benefits. He emphasized the event’s apolitical nature, focusing on delivering an exceptional experience for race enthusiasts.

Despite mild temperatures affecting track icing efforts, Kostanowicz expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt to challenging conditions, having dealt with similar situations before. He highlighted the symbiotic relationship between the two Saults, where attendees often cross over to the Canadian side for accommodations and shopping, fostering economic vitality on both sides of the border.

As the International 500 Snowmobile Race approaches, Kostanowicz encouraged continued cross-border engagement, recognizing the mutual reliance between the communities and the positive impact on local economies. The event is scheduled to run from Feb. 1-7 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
