“PEI Woman Jailed for Fatal Infant Head Injury”

A woman from Charlottetown, Cassie Acorn, has been sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to causing fatal injuries to her three-month-old daughter in 2025. The judge emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the justice system and condemning Acorn’s actions. Acorn struck her infant’s head against the floor when the baby was crying uncontrollably, resulting in a fractured skull. Despite initially facing a first-degree murder charge, a psychiatric evaluation revealed that Acorn was suffering from postpartum depression at the time of the incident, leading to her plea of infanticide.

Judge Jeff Lantz deliberated for three weeks before handing down the sentence, which includes one year in jail and two years of probation. The defense had requested a suspended sentence or house arrest, citing Acorn’s remorse and enduring consequences. However, Lantz deemed that a “real jail” term was necessary to uphold justice and public confidence, considering infanticide as one of the most serious crimes.

Acorn’s case is distinct from typical infanticide scenarios, as she wanted the child despite the circumstances of conception and aimed to prove her capabilities as a mother. While acknowledging Acorn’s challenging background as an abuse survivor with postpartum depression, the judge concluded that incarceration was necessary, emphasizing the gravity of the offense.

Acorn has taken steps to prevent future pregnancies and agreed not to care for any children moving forward, reducing the likelihood of a similar tragedy. She will also provide a DNA sample for a national database and face two years of probation post-release. Throughout the court proceedings, Acorn displayed minimal emotion until being escorted out by sheriffs.
