“Former Liberal Minister Kirsty Duncan Dies at 59”

Former Liberal cabinet minister Kirsty Duncan has passed away at the age of 59 after battling cancer for several years. Born on October 31, 1966, Duncan served as the Liberal MP for Etobicoke North in Toronto for five terms from 2008 to 2025. During the initial term under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, she held positions as the Minister of Science and Sport, as well as briefly as the Minister for Persons with Disabilities.

Duncan, a former scientist and athlete, took a medical leave on January 26, 2023, but continued her duties as an MP. She chose not to run for re-election last year. Despite her short tenure in the sports portfolio, Duncan prioritized promoting safe sport throughout her time as the sports minister and beyond.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences on Monday to Duncan’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those inspired by her work. He highlighted Duncan’s dedication to kindness and service, noting her achievements as an educator and scientist, including leading an Arctic expedition to investigate the origins of the 1918 influenza pandemic.

Trudeau mourned Duncan’s passing in a social media post, describing her as a friend who embodied values of knowledge, compassion, and service. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also shared his condolences, praising Duncan for her commitment to serving the people of Etobicoke North.

The House of Commons in Ottawa held a moment of silence on Monday to honor Duncan’s memory. Assistant Deputy Speaker John Nater led the tribute, acknowledging Duncan’s hard work, courage, and compassion during her time as a parliamentarian. Parliamentarians paid their respects to Duncan’s family and loved ones for their loss and remembered her as a dedicated public servant.
