“Parks Canada Warns Against Ski Stunts on Rideau Canal”

Parks Canada has issued a warning against skiing over the Rideau Canal following a viral video showcasing a member of The Jetskis group attempting the risky stunt. The video, posted on YouTube, captures 21-year-old Tai How skiing through trees near Parliament Hill, then launching off a snow ramp to cross a 9.7-meter gap over the canal, resulting in a hard landing on the opposite edge.

In response to the stunt, Parks Canada emphasized that unauthorized activities like ski jumping are not permitted at the Rideau Canal National Historic Site. Enforcement measures have been increased, and violations may lead to fines.

Tai How, speaking from Nelson, B.C., where he is currently engaged in freeride skiing, explained that the stunt was performed last February during a visit to Ottawa. Despite breaking his skis during the landing, How sustained only a thumb injury. He expressed confidence in attempting the jump, stating that it felt like a challenge tailored for him.

Local authorities, however, expressed concerns about potential copycat attempts following the video’s social media traction. Benjamin Gales from Parks Canada highlighted the risks associated with such activities and warned of fines up to $10,000 for trespassing.

Ottawa Paramedic Service’s Marc-Antoine Deschamps labeled the stunt as extremely dangerous, citing potential severe injuries and the complex rescue operations that could follow. How acknowledged the risks involved in such stunts but emphasized the importance of pushing oneself within reasonable limits to achieve challenging goals in the sport.

While Parks Canada and local authorities discourage such dangerous activities, How’s perspective underscores the balance between thrill-seeking and safety in extreme sports.
