Members of Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly showcased their support for Greenland by hoisting its flag in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s annexation threats. The flag-raising event in downtown Iqaluit saw a significant turnout, with attendees including the territory’s premier, Speaker, representatives from the Danish consulate, and Greenlanders residing in Nunavut.
Nunavut Speaker David Joanasie emphasized the strong connections between Nunavut’s Inuit community and the sizable Inuit population in Greenland. He expressed solidarity with Greenlanders, stating, “For the people of Greenland living in Iqaluit or Nunavut, we stand by you, support you, and will speak out on your behalf,” in Inuktitut.
Earlier that day, Trump shared an AI-created image showing him in a meeting with European leaders in the Oval Office, with American flags superimposed over Greenland, Canada, Cuba, and Venezuela on a map of the Western Hemisphere. Additionally, Trump threatened to enforce new tariffs on eight European countries for their lack of support regarding his proposed Greenland acquisition.
Simultaneously, as protests against Trump erupted in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, a group in Iqaluit marched in solidarity with Greenland, demonstrating their backing for the island’s stance.
