ABC has given the green light to a new spinoff of the popular medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy,” set in the rugged landscape of West Texas. The untitled series is set to premiere in the 2026-2027 broadcast season with a “straight to series order,” bypassing the pilot episode stage. The show will focus on a team at a rural medical center in West Texas, described as the last hope for care before vast stretches of wilderness.
Fans have expressed mixed reactions to the Texas setting, speculating on possible connections to the original series which had characters scattered across different locations. While some questioned the choice, others welcomed the change from the Seattle backdrop of the original show, anticipating the drama that a rural hospital in the desert can bring.
Behind the scenes, the spinoff will retain the creative talents of Shonda Rhimes, co-creator and executive producer of “Grey’s Anatomy,” along with Meg Marinis. Ellen Pompeo, a long-time star of the original show, will also serve as an executive producer on the new series, along with Betsy Beers. Details on potential crossover with “Grey’s Anatomy” characters have not been confirmed yet.
Marinis expressed excitement about expanding the “Grey’s Anatomy” universe with new characters and stories that capture the essence of the original show, all within the Texas setting. Produced by Shondaland and 20th Television, this spinoff marks the fourth extension of “Grey’s Anatomy,” following “Private Practice,” “Station 19,” and “Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team.”
