Swiss Skier Franjo von Allmen Wins Men’s Downhill Gold

Swiss skier Franjo von Allmen clinched the gold medal in the men’s downhill event at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, marking the first gold medal of the games. The competition took place in Bormio, Italy, with von Allmen completing the challenging Stelvio course in 1 minute and 51.61 seconds. Italy’s Giovanni Franzoni secured the silver with a time of 1:51.81, while his compatriot Dominik Paris claimed the bronze medal in 1:52.11, pushing Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt (1:52.31) out of the podium positions.

Von Allmen’s victory continues the Swiss dominance in the downhill event, following Beat Feuz’s win at the Beijing Games in 2022. Canadian skier Jack Crawford from Toronto finished in ninth place, 1.39 seconds behind von Allmen.

Reflecting on his performance, Crawford expressed his struggles to find form and confidence in his skiing but believed he had the potential to win the race. Despite some mistakes that cost him a podium finish, he remained positive about his performance. Other Canadian skiers included Cam Alexander in 14th place, Jeff Read in 25th, and Brodie Seger in 28th place.

Von Allmen and Odermatt, known for their friendly rivalry, have been sharing course insights while competing. Von Allmen’s recent success includes winning the downhill event at the world championships in Austria. The event saw enthusiastic support from fans, with Italian skiers Franzoni and Paris receiving loud cheers.

Franzoni, a 24-year-old skier from Manerba del Garda, showcased his talent with recent victories in World Cup races. Paris, a seasoned skier with numerous wins at the venue, clinched his first Olympic medal after participating in five Winter Games. Additionally, Paris is known for his musical talents as the lead singer of a heavy metal band called “Rise of Voltage.”

The Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics have witnessed exciting performances from skiers around the world, setting the stage for more thrilling competitions in the days to come.
