An independence rally held at Calgary’s Stampede Park on Monday night shone a spotlight on the Alberta separation movement. Thousands gathered at the Big Four Roadhouse to listen to speeches from separatist leaders. Security officials estimated that over 3,000 individuals attended the rally, with an additional 1,000 viewers watching the livestream on YouTube.
During the event, Alberta Prosperity Project CEO Mitch Sylvestre outlined his grievances with the federal government, citing issues such as equalization payments, gun bans, and Canada’s immigration policies over the past decade. Sylvestre questioned whether it was wise to remain in a business arrangement with a group that showed disrespect and continual mistreatment.
Prior to the rally, long queues formed outside the venue as people waited to sign a petition advocating for a referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada. Supporters of independence expressed their desire for better governance tailored to Alberta’s needs, emphasizing self-sufficiency and improved support for the elderly.
While some attendees, like Alex Clarke and Dan Rollings, voiced strong support for separation, others, like Michael Hartley, expressed their commitment to remaining part of Canada. The rally highlighted the division of opinions within the province on the issue of separation.
Petition signing events for the separation movement have been taking place across Alberta, with upcoming events planned in Calgary and other communities. The petition requires close to 178,000 signatures by May 2 to proceed towards a potential referendum on Alberta’s independence.
