Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Rules Out 2028 Presidential Run

Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer has confirmed that she will not be entering the 2028 U.S. presidential race, putting an end to ongoing speculation. Whitmer, who has been seen as a potential contender for the White House due to her wins in the closely fought state of Michigan, made her decision clear during an interview with Fox 2 Detroit. She expressed that she believes there will be a competitive field of candidates but stated definitively that she will not be among them in 2028.

Whitmer, who has reached her term limit as governor, has previously indicated that she intends to take some time before making any further political decisions. The annual Mackinac policy conference in Michigan, where Whitmer is being recognized, has been a focal point for presidential conjecture, with other potential candidates like Pete Buttigieg and Senator Elissa Slotkin also present.

Throughout the past year, Whitmer’s actions have been closely monitored for indications of her potential national aspirations. While she has criticized former President Donald Trump’s trade policies for their impact on Michigan’s auto industry, she also drew attention for her cordial reception of Trump during his visit to the state. Trump had previously criticized Whitmer and other governors for their COVID-19 lockdown measures.

Whitmer’s decision not to run in 2028 aligns with Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s similar announcement. Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran for president in 2020 and later lost to Trump, has hinted at a potential third presidential bid in 2028. Michigan is also expected to witness a closely watched U.S. Senate race, as Democrat Gary Peters has declared he will not seek re-election after two terms. Additionally, Whitmer’s Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, is eyeing a run for governor in the upcoming state elections.
