“Mayor Salonen Unveils 2026 Budget with Tax Hikes”

Wilmot Township’s Mayor Natasha Salonen presented the 2026 budget on Friday, marking her first budget since gaining increased mayor powers from the province in May of last year. The new powers require mayors to submit budgets before February 1st annually.

Mayor Salonen clarified that while she utilized the enhanced powers, it was a legislative obligation. The budget drafting process involved the assistance of KPMG due to a prior lack of staff with accounting expertise in the township. KPMG aided in analyzing budget lines, ensuring accuracy, and updating outdated assumptions.

The proposed budget includes a nine percent tax increase for capital projects, aligned with a decision from the previous year to bolster the township’s capital reserve. Additionally, there are plans for a 9.7 percent property tax increase, a 4.9 percent water rate hike, and a five percent wastewater rate increase. These adjustments are estimated to raise costs by around $24 per month for the average homeowner.

The budget allocates funds for various essential projects, such as a new fire station, road enhancements, and upgrades to the Wilmot Recreation Centre. It includes $12 million for 44 planned capital projects in 2026 and a $1.5 million reserve transfer. KPMG also developed a long-term financial plan for the township, focusing on reserves and capital planning, set to be reviewed by the council in April.

Following the budget presentation, council members can propose amendments, and a public meeting is scheduled for January 29 to gather community feedback on the budget plan.
