Lindsey Vonn, a seasoned skier, has a deep understanding of the Olympic downhill course, having triumphed in a remarkable 12 World Cup races on the Olympia delle Tofane track. Despite her extensive experience, the 41-year-old American encountered a shocking crash just seconds into her run at the Milan Cortina Winter Games.
The downhill course’s standout feature is the Tofana schuss, a narrow passage flanked by Dolomite rock walls where skiers reach speeds of up to 130 km/h. However, the crucial section of the Olympia delle Tofane track lies beyond the schuss, involving a pivotal right turn with an uphill component, which proved to be Vonn’s downfall.
While navigating the reverse bank and a slight incline, Vonn was unexpectedly launched into the air by a bump, leading to a collision with a gate. Her attempts to regain balance mid-air resulted in a perilous landing with her skis perpendicular to the slope. Subsequently, she tumbled and slid to a halt in a vulnerable position, away from safety measures.
The technical nature of the course, particularly a challenging bump this year, contributed to Vonn’s airborne mishap. Despite the safety precautions in place, including an air bag under Vonn’s racing suit that inflated upon impact, the severity of the fall was unavoidable.
