Madagascar activist voices discontent with the current regime following a recent change in leadership that occurred after a youth-driven movement prompted the former president to step down and flee the nation. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who took office on March 25 with promises of rebuilding trust and combating corruption, has faced criticism as activists express concerns over the apparent crackdown on freedom of expression. Arimamy Todisoa, a prominent member of Gen Z 261, a youth movement in Madagascar, highlighted that the new administration resembles the previous one in terms of control and influence, despite claims of reform. Todisoa emphasized the necessity for profound systemic transformations to address the country’s ongoing challenges. The activist revealed that several fellow group members were arrested on allegations related to endangering state security and engaging in criminal activities, which he believes are fabricated to suppress dissent. He called for the overhaul of key institutions in Madagascar, citing persistent issues that have plagued the nation.
Todisoa underscored the determination of young people to advocate for change within Madagascar, rejecting the notion that leaving the country is the sole solution for a better future. He criticized the increasing disparity between the ruling elite and the general population, emphasizing the need for genuine reforms that prioritize the interests of the people. The activist accused the current administration of resorting to authoritarian tactics to stifle opposition and maintain power, contrasting their actions with the principles of the previous regime. Despite facing potential arrest and going into hiding, Todisoa remains committed to resisting the oppressive regime and exposing its alleged corruption to the international community. He expressed intentions to mobilize further protests to raise awareness among the Malagasy populace and rally support for their cause, emphasizing the importance of continued activism both online and on the streets.
