“Klaebo Wins Eighth Gold, Ties Winter Games Record”

Norwegian cross-country skiing sensation Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo made history on Friday the 13th at the Milan Cortina Olympics, clinching his eighth gold medal to equal an all-time Winter Games record. The 29-year-old secured victory in the men’s 10-kilometre interval start race, marking his third gold at the 2026 Games.

Having now achieved this milestone, Klaebo joins a select group of retired Norwegian athletes, including Marit Bjoergen, Bjoern Daehlie, and Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. Despite superstitions surrounding the date, Klaebo sees Friday the 13th as a fortunate day, especially since he proposed to his girlfriend on the same date last year.

The triumph was particularly significant for Klaebo due to his previous struggles in individual races against the clock. He emphasized the importance of this win and expressed pride in being mentioned alongside other esteemed athletes. Klaebo’s strategic approach and exceptional performance propelled him to victory, finishing ahead of Mathis Desloges from France and Einar Hedegart of Norway.

The atmosphere at the event was jubilant, with celebrations extending to team members and supporters. Klaebo’s success was lauded by fans, officials, and even the Norwegian Prime Minister, highlighting the widespread admiration for his achievements. As the competition unfolded against the picturesque backdrop of the Dolomite mountains, Klaebo’s dominance on the track solidified his status as a Winter Games legend.

The event also saw Canadian athletes like Tom Stephen, Remi Drolet from Rossland, B.C., and Max Hollmann from Thunder Bay, Ont., showcasing their skills on the international stage. With Klaebo’s remarkable performance setting the tone, the Winter Olympics continue to deliver thrilling moments and inspiring feats of athleticism.
