Iran confirmed on Wednesday that it had carried out attacks on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in response to the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the U.S. This marks the largest series of retaliatory assaults on maritime vessels by both parties since the beginning of the ongoing conflict.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran announced that it had launched a ballistic missile strike on a U.S. military base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, Iran reported firing upon two U.S. ships and eight oil tankers that were attempting to traverse a restricted area within the Strait of Hormuz.
These incidents in and around the crucial water passage led to a spike in oil prices, with the international benchmark Brent crude surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The conflict has disrupted global oil markets, with hopes of a resolution between the U.S. and Iran dashed, and escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen further adding to the uncertainty.
As a result of the turmoil, gas prices in the U.S. surged, with a gallon of regular gasoline averaging $4.15, a 26% increase from the previous year. Diesel prices also soared, reaching $5.90 per gallon, up 59% compared to the same day last year. The situation has become a pressing concern for American consumers ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
In Canada, gas prices have seen a similar upward trend since the onset of the conflict, prompting the government to extend the gas tax holiday until the end of January. The ongoing hostilities have disrupted oil shipments and maritime activities in the region, impacting global energy markets.
Amidst the escalating tensions, Iran has declared a restricted maritime zone extending from Chabahar in Iran into parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. This move follows recent military actions, including a drone strike on an oil tanker in Iraqi waters and threats against oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports.
Despite efforts to mitigate the impact on oil transit, the conflict has severely restricted traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz, disrupting the flow of oil and other essential resources. Both Iran and the U.S. have engaged in military actions, with the U.S. implementing a blockade of Iranian ports and Iran announcing a broader exclusion zone around the strait.
The situation remains volatile, with ongoing missile strikes and military confrontations in the region. The extent of the damage and casualties resulting from these incidents is still being assessed, underscoring the heightened tensions and risks in the region.
