“Massive Titanosaurs Buried Eggs for Incubation”

A recent discovery of fossil eggshells belonging to some of the largest dinosaurs ever found suggests they thrived in a cooler climate, far from the equator. Unlike smaller dinosaurs, these massive titanosaurs could not incubate their volleyball-sized eggs by sitting on them due to their size. Instead, a new study led by University of Tsukuba paleontologist Kohei Tanaka proposes that titanosaurs likely utilized a technique similar to modern crocodiles, burying their eggs in warm piles of decaying vegetation to maintain optimal incubation conditions.

Titanosaurs, massive plant-eating dinosaurs weighing up to 75 tonnes, were characterized by their long necks and tails, moving on four legs. These colossal creatures, such as the Nullotitan glaciaris, coexisted in a lush coastal ecosystem during the Late Cretaceous period, alongside various other dinosaur species and a diverse range of other fauna. The discovery of titanosaur eggs in southern Argentina, dating back to 72 to 66 million years ago, challenges previous assumptions about dinosaur nesting behaviors and environmental adaptations.

The researchers analyzed the microscopic pores on the eggshells, indicating that the titanosaurs likely buried their eggs to regulate temperature and ensure proper oxygen flow for the developing embryos. This innovative nesting strategy showcases the adaptability of dinosaurs, even the largest species, to thrive in diverse environments. Further studies on titanosaur nesting behaviors across different regions and time periods could provide valuable insights into their evolutionary success and global distribution during the Late Cretaceous era.
