Three months following a distressing car fire incident, Jason Pelletier remains in anticipation of answers and potential additional compensation from Hyundai, the automaker involved. The event occurred on June 9 while Pelletier, a school principal, was commuting to work in Toronto’s north end. His Santa Fe suddenly erupted in flames, emitting thick black smoke and rendering the engine and brakes unresponsive.
Struggling to navigate through traffic on Highway 401 during rush hour, Pelletier managed to escape the vehicle just before it exploded. The unsettling aspect for him was having recently visited the dealership for a head gasket replacement, a crucial engine component. Despite noticing a burning odor post-service, he was assured by the service manager that it was residue-related.
The next day, a warning message regarding a potential engine control issue appeared on his car’s touchscreen, prompting more inquiries to the service manager. Unfortunately, no response was received before the vehicle burst into flames. Hyundai Canada declined an interview request but emphasized safety as a top priority in an email statement.
Following the incident, an investigation was initiated by Hycay Consulting Engineering and the insurance company to determine the fire’s cause. While Transport Canada reported over 1,100 vehicle fires between 2016 and 2026, with Hyundai accounting for about 15% of incidents, the exact triggers for such events remain diverse and challenging to pinpoint.
Despite receiving compensation from his insurer for the vehicle’s value and a rental car, Pelletier still seeks reimbursement for personal belongings lost in the fire, including valuable items related to his activities during Pride Month. With his Santa Fe still under forensic scrutiny, Pelletier contemplates the possibility of additional recalls that could have averted the ordeal, expressing hopes that automakers prioritize consumer safety.
