Canadian Snowboarder Mark McMorris Withdraws from Men’s Big Air Event

Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris will sit out the men’s big air event at the Milano-Cortina Olympic Games following a training accident where he hit his head. After being evaluated by medical teams from Canada Snowboard and the Canadian Olympic Committee, it was decided that the 32-year-old athlete will not participate in the men’s big air qualification as a precautionary measure.

McMorris expressed his disappointment in a social media post but remains optimistic about competing in the upcoming slopestyle event. Brendan Matthews, the vice president of business development and partnerships at Canada Snowboard, confirmed that McMorris was hospitalized briefly and has since been released. Despite the scare, McMorris is reported to be in good spirits and is focusing on his recovery.

The incident was described as a “freak accident” by Matthews, attributing it to a sudden fall caused by loose snow on the slope. The dangers of big air were highlighted by McMorris’s crash, emphasizing the risks associated with competing in such extreme sports.

Meanwhile, Hiroto Ogiwara of Japan secured the top qualifying spot for the men’s big air final, with Quebec City’s Frank Jobin representing Canada in the upcoming event. Jobin, Bouchard, and Spalding, all first-time Olympic competitors, showed resilience and determination in their performances, despite the challenges posed by the competition.

The Canadian Olympic Committee reassured that McMorris’s well-being is the top priority, with medical professionals closely monitoring his condition. The focus remains on ensuring the athletes are in optimal health to compete while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of extreme sports competitions.
