Canadian Ice Dance Duo Gilles & Poirier Thrive in Olympic Pursuit

Canadian ice dance duo Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier have kicked off their pursuit of an Olympic medal in the individual event. Following the short dance program on Monday, they are currently in third place. Sitting in bronze position, Gilles and Poirier are trailing behind Maddison Chock and Evan Bates from the United States, who are in second place. Leading the pack are former Canadian Olympian Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron representing France.

After their performance, Poirier expressed their focus and motivation, stating that they were fully immersed in the program and satisfied with their performance. The duo’s determination to improve led them to sharpen their focus, resulting in a joyful performance.

The ice dance competition saw three Canadian teams, including Gilles and Poirier, Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac, and Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha, showcasing their skills. The teams danced to music from the 1990s, a theme for the current competitive season. All three Canadian teams made it to the top 20 and qualified for the final free dance programs scheduled for Wednesday.

Making their Olympic debut in the individual short program, Lauriault and Le Gac scored 74.35 points and ranked 15th overall after the short dance. The pair, who married in 2015, transitioned from representing France to representing Canada in 2020.

Lajoie and Lagha, partners since 2011, delivered a season’s best performance with a sports-themed routine in the short dance. Their impressive score of 79.66 placed them ninth, securing a spot in the free dance finals.

Performing to RuPaul’s “Supermodel,” Lajoie and Lagha scored 86.18 points, positioning themselves as strong contenders for a medal in the individual ice dance event. Gilles and Poirier, aiming for their first Olympic medal, are ranked fifth in the world and are determined to make their mark at Milano Cortina 2026.
