“Beloved ‘Flavia de Luce’ Author Alan Bradley Dies at 87”

Renowned for his engaging storytelling, Alan Bradley, the author behind the beloved Flavia de Luce mystery series, passed away at 87 on the Isle of Man, as confirmed by Penguin Random House Canada on Tuesday. Born in Toronto in 1938, Bradley’s literary journey took off in his later years, with his creation of the captivating character Flavia de Luce. Initially a minor character, Flavia evolved into the central figure of a bestselling series that has resonated with readers worldwide.

After a successful career in television engineering and academia, Bradley retired in 1994 and delved into full-time writing. His first novel featuring Flavia, “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie,” garnered critical acclaim, winning multiple prestigious awards. The series has since expanded to 11 books, selling over six million copies and being translated into 36 languages.

Bradley’s impact extended beyond literary accolades, with numerous readers inspired by Flavia’s character to pursue careers in science. His influence was not confined to his audience but also extended to the writing community in Saskatchewan, where he played a pivotal role in supporting local writers.

Penguin Random House Canada’s CEO, Kristin Cochrane, praised Bradley’s creative genius and storytelling prowess, emphasizing his lasting contribution to literature.
