The B.C. Conservative Party is in search of a new leader following the removal of John Rustad in December. Despite his previous resignation, Rustad is reportedly considering re-entering the leadership race. Two sources have disclosed to CBC News that Rustad has requested a nomination package, although he has not confirmed this personally. Rustad indicated that he will provide more information during the upcoming legislative session in Victoria.
A social media post featuring a graphic of Rustad with the phrase “Everyone loves a comeback” was shared briefly before being taken down. Rustad disclaimed responsibility for the post, attributing it to his constituency staff’s error. The former leader stepped down in December amid internal turmoil within the Official Opposition, with five MLAs departing or being ousted from the party.
Trevor Halford was appointed as interim leader by the party leadership before Rustad formally resigned due to alleged incapacitation. This situation caused confusion over party leadership for a day until Rustad officially resigned to prevent internal conflict. Despite his past challenges, Rustad’s potential return to the leadership race has surprised some observers, with ten individuals already declaring their candidacy for the leadership position.
Among the declared candidates are prominent figures such as former B.C. Liberal minister Iain Black, B.C. Conservative MLA Sheldon Clare, and former federal Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Additionally, Richmond-Queensborough MLA Steve Kooner emphasized his legal expertise, particularly regarding property rights issues. Abbotsford South MLA Bruce Banman highlighted community support as a motivation for his candidacy, recalling his early involvement in reviving the party. B.C. Conservative MLA Harman Banghu is also expected to enter the race.
Prospective leaders must secure 250 signatures from party members by February 15 to qualify as official candidates and pay a $100,000 entry fee. The new party leader will be announced on May 30, marking a significant milestone in the party’s future direction.
