Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a rut almost four years ago, until her brother suggested she channel her love for K-pop and BTS into something positive. Taking his advice, Vann established BTS Army Toronto, a local fan club that organizes events and meet-ups to unite fans of the popular South Korean boy band.
Tragically, shortly after creating BTS Army Toronto, Vann’s brother passed away. Despite her grief, the 43-year-old continued to nurture the fan club, transforming it into a vibrant community that hosts numerous events, charity initiatives, and promotes local Korean businesses.
As BTS prepares for their highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade, Vann, along with her 24-year-old son Jordan Vann and a dedicated team of around 10 individuals, is excited about the upcoming concerts. The fan club is gearing up to welcome BTS for sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium, where the K-pop sensation will perform for an estimated 100,000 fans over two nights.
The City of Toronto recently unveiled BTS Boulevard on Yonge Street from North York Boulevard to Finch Avenue in celebration of the concerts. The temporary street renaming, featuring a red design inspired by the tour’s branding, will remain in place until September 23. Additionally, the city declared Saturday and Sunday as BTS Weekend in Toronto, illuminating the Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square in purple, a color associated with BTS and their fans.
Fans of BTS, known for their passionate devotion, appreciate the group’s music that delves into themes like mental health, self-love, and personal growth. Vann, a real estate agent who has expanded her work through BTS Army Toronto to establish a new business venture called Idol Konnect, believes in the band’s mission to create music that makes a positive impact on the world.
BTS, who recently completed mandatory military service, are currently on their Arirang World Tour, with Toronto being their only Canadian stop. Since their debut in 2013, BTS has risen from underdogs to global superstars, breaking records and paving the way for K-pop’s expansion internationally.
Excitement is building among Toronto fans as they eagerly anticipate the weekend concerts. Local businesses and the community are rallying behind BTS’s visit, with official merchandise stores and fan activities attracting a surge of visitors. As the city gears up for the concerts, Vann’s BTS Army Toronto is set to engage fans at the Toronto Korean Festival and host pre-show events near the concert venue.
Looking ahead to the performances, Vann is eager to experience the unique concert setup at Rogers Stadium and anticipates the surprise songs that BTS will perform. As the concert dates draw closer, Vann and the BTS community are preparing to revel in the unforgettable concert experience and the sense of connection it brings.
