Madonna, the iconic figure in the pop music realm, has once again dominated the list of nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, surpassing even Taylor Swift. With 11 nominations for the upcoming ceremony, Madonna secures her place as the most nominated artist at the VMAs for the third time in her illustrious career. The nominations recognize her work on the highly successful album “Confessions II” and its corresponding film.
Despite Taylor Swift’s status as the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, Madonna outshined her by receiving nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each earning seven nominations.
This isn’t the first time Madonna has led the VMAs nominations; she previously achieved this feat in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, Madonna’s groundbreaking performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she famously sang “Like a Virgin” while clad in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, remains a pivotal moment in VMA history, challenging the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations are nods for video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Sabrina Carpenter. In the highly coveted category of video of the year, Madonna’s “Confessions” will compete against Swift’s “Ophelia,” as well as videos from Grande, Carpenter, Bruno Mars, and Gener8ion and Yung Lean.
Voting for 13 categories is open to the public, with winners set to be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on Sept. 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
