Another Beer Store in London is scheduled to close this spring, reflecting the ongoing trend of the company downsizing its physical presence in Ontario. The store located at 1727 Richmond St. will cease operations on March 22, alongside three other stores in Brampton, Etobicoke, and Hamilton. The Beer Store has been gradually closing numerous outlets across the province since losing its exclusive retail contract in 2024. This change allowed beer sales in grocery stores, convenience stores, and big-box retailers. Initially required to keep at least 300 of its 438 stores open until the end of the previous year, the company is now adapting to the evolving alcohol market in Ontario.
Ozzie Ahmed, the vice president of retail, stated that these closures are a response to the shifting alcohol retail landscape in the province. Ahmed emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting changing consumer preferences by offering a wide beer selection and a top-notch deposit return system. With the upcoming closure of the north London location, this will be the fourth Beer Store shut down in the city since 2024, leaving only six operational outlets in London.
As the number of Beer Stores dwindles, customers may face limitations in returning their empty alcohol containers for refunds. The government plans to expand the return of alcohol containers to more retailers gradually, but specifics regarding the transition process and operational responsibilities are still under discussion. While the Beer Store has pledged to assist affected employees, the exact number of staff impacted at the north London store has not been disclosed.
