A teenager hailing from the Quebec City vicinity faces charges linked to terrorism, as reported by the RCMP on Thursday. The adolescent allegedly utilized social media platforms to endorse the violent principles of a group called Atomwaffen Division, aiming to create and share online content to motivate and recruit others. Atomwaffen Division, established in the U.S. in 2013, is identified as a terrorist organization by the Canadian government since 2021.
Inspired by the notorious figure Charles Manson, Atomwaffen Division envisions a future culminating in a racial conflict. Described by Evan Balgord, the executive director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, as a militant accelerationist organization, members, including youth, believe in utilizing violence and terrorism to expedite the perceived collapse of the government for the benefit of the white population.
The group originated from the now-defunct forum Iron March, characterized by Balgord as a hub for fascist and neo-Nazi individuals. In 2024, the Canadian Anti-Hate Network identified five individuals claiming to be teenagers in Quebec promoting Atomwaffen Canada, although no confirmed link exists to the ongoing legal case. The RCMP clarified they lack pertinent information on these individuals.
The charged teen’s identity remains undisclosed due to being a minor, confirmed by RCMP’s Erique Gasse on Thursday. The minor, apprehended in September 2024, underwent questioning and had his electronic devices confiscated by investigators before being released with a promise to appear in court. The youth faces charges of involvement in a terrorist group’s activities and is set to appear in a Quebec City court on Friday. In 2022, approximately 60 RCMP officers executed raids southwest of Quebec City targeting individuals associated with Atomwaffen Division.
