In a surprising development on Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry announced the reception of 54 unidentified bodies and 66 boxes containing the remains of Palestinians who are believed to have perished in the conflict with Hamas over the past two years. Officials in Gaza have initiated the process of identifying the recovered remains.
Mu’in Al-Wahidi, who heads the special committee overseeing the receipt of bodies at Al-Shifa Hospital, confirmed the reception of the unidentified bodies and remains late in the evening on Wednesday. Al-Wahidi mentioned that the hospital had received intact bodies and human remains enclosed in boxes, which will undergo forensic examination the following day.
Health authorities in Gaza disclosed that there is limited information available regarding the circumstances of the deaths, identities of the deceased, or the origin of the remains. They clarified that the transfer of remains from Israel to Gaza was not part of any truce agreement or an exchange for Israeli hostages’ bodies.
Last week, Israeli authorities released the bodies of 15 unidentified Palestinians, marking the final exchange between Israel and Hamas as part of the initial phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan. This release followed the recovery of the remains of the last hostage, Ran Gvili, who had been held in Gaza for over 840 days after being captured by Hamas during an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The transfer of 54 bodies from Israel to Gaza on Wednesday brings the total number of deceased individuals released by Israel since the commencement of the ceasefire deal on October 10, 2024, to 414. The repatriation of Palestinian remains was a fundamental commitment outlined in the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement signed in October.
Amani Al-Naouq, the spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, confirmed the ICRC’s facilitation of the transfer on Wednesday. Al-Naouq acknowledged the challenging task ahead for forensic authorities in identifying the remains under significant resource constraints, highlighting the thousands of families seeking clarity about their missing loved ones.
The handover of the bodies occurred amidst heightened tensions in Gaza, with Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes resulting in the deaths of 24 Palestinians, including seven children and a paramedic. The Israeli military stated that the strikes were in response to militant gunfire directed at Israeli troops near the armistice line with Hamas, citing the incident as a breach of the ceasefire agreement.
