Russia’s top court has ruled to exclude the sole party opposing the Kremlin’s military intervention in Ukraine from participating in the upcoming parliamentary election. The Supreme Court invalidated Yabloko’s registration following a complaint from a pro-Kremlin party, overturning the Central Election Commission’s initial decision to include Yabloko on the ballot among 10 other parties.
Yabloko, once a prominent liberal voice critical of the government, lost its parliamentary seats in the State Duma as the Kremlin solidified its control over Russian politics. The party, known for its opposition to deploying troops to Ukraine, advocated for peace and diplomacy in its campaign messaging, emphasizing a Russia free from fear and political oppression.
Despite the setback, Yabloko’s veteran leader Grigory Yavlinsky expressed disappointment over the ruling and vowed to appeal, stating that barring the party from the election signifies a reluctance to engage with dissenting voices challenging the authorities. Yavlinsky urged the government to listen to the public’s calls for peace, freedom, and a life without fear.
Numerous exiled Russian opposition figures, including Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Alexei Navalny, as well as politicians Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Kara-Murza, endorsed Yabloko, citing its anti-war stance. Yabloko’s chairman, Nikolai Rybakov, distanced the party from support by Kremlin critics abroad, emphasizing that the party’s local supporters genuinely seek a peaceful and safe future in Russia.
The court’s decision to remove Yabloko from the ballot is seen as a response to the party’s unexpected resonance with the public on peace issues, challenging the Kremlin’s assumptions about its limited support base. The move presents a dilemma for the Kremlin as it signals fear of Yabloko’s platform, according to political analyst Nikolay Petrov.
Yavlinsky viewed the court’s ruling as a validation of Yabloko’s platform and the public’s strong demand for peace and freedom, surpassing the authorities’ expectations. Kremlin-aligned parties have criticized Yabloko’s stance on Ukraine, with some calling for investigations into the party’s activities.
Yabloko has faced escalating pressure from the Kremlin, with key members being jailed or labeled as “foreign agents,” subjected to government scrutiny and discrediting tactics reminiscent of Soviet-era repression. The party’s prominent figures have been targeted with legal charges, including imprisonment and restrictions on political participation, reflecting the government’s tightening grip on dissent.
