Conservative MP Andrew Lawton initiated the nomination and has been actively seeking signatures for an online petition on the party’s website. Lawton defended Cherry, highlighting his longstanding support for hockey, veterans, and his unreserved expression of commonly held opinions.
Despite some Conservatives, including party leader Pierre Poilievre, voicing support for Cherry, there are concerns over his history of controversial statements. Cherry, known for his flamboyant suits during his long tenure on “Coach’s Corner” on Hockey Night in Canada, often drew criticism for his comments, including mispronunciations of players’ names and contentious remarks about various groups.
Cherry’s dismissal in 2019 from Hockey Night in Canada followed remarks deemed divisive and offensive by the CBC. Critics argue that Cherry’s past statements do not align with the values of inclusivity and respect that the Order of Canada represents. Despite some MPs endorsing Cherry’s nomination, several Quebec Conservatives have strongly opposed it, emphasizing the need for the award to reflect individuals who embody values of unity and respect for all Canadians.
Quebec MPs, including Luc Berthold, Gérard Deltell, and Eric Lefebvre, have criticized Cherry’s past comments as disrespectful and divisive, asserting that awarding him the Order of Canada would send the wrong message about Canadian values.
