A Calgary father, Muhammad Rahman, appeared in court facing a charge of child abduction after allegedly hiding his son overseas for two years. During the court hearing, it was mentioned that the boy had been influenced to resent his mother. Rahman, a former doctor in Calgary, took his son abroad in 2023, where he cut off contact with the mother until his arrest in Mauritius in 2025.
The prosecution argued against releasing Rahman on bail, citing his potential flight risk and significant wealth abroad. It was revealed that Rahman owed $1.6 million to Alberta Health Services due to improper medical billings. Evidence presented in court showed that Rahman had transferred large sums of money to Turkey and purchased a home there in 2019.
Despite Rahman’s lawyer claiming that he had permission to travel with his son, the prosecution emphasized that the authenticity of the permission letter was questionable. The mother denied authorizing the child’s international travel, leading to a “he said, she said” situation in the trial. The judge is set to make a decision on Rahman’s bail next week.
