“Ford Urges Canadians to Avoid Chinese EVs Amid Trade Deal Concerns”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has urged Canadians to avoid purchasing Chinese-made electric vehicles following a recent agreement between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Ford expressed his disapproval of the deal, criticizing Carney for not consulting with him beforehand and warning of negative effects on Ontario’s auto industry. He emphasized the importance of supporting Canadian car manufacturers and suggested that Chinese automakers are unlikely to establish production facilities in the country.

The agreement involves a significant reduction in tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, allowing for the import of up to 49,000 units annually in exchange for China lowering its canola tariffs. Ford, along with industry leaders, including Brian Kingston and Flavio Volpe, raised concerns about the deal’s impact on Ontario’s auto sector, describing it as a disadvantage for domestic manufacturers.

Flavio Volpe highlighted that the initial purpose of imposing high tariffs was to protect Canadian EV investments, and the new agreement jeopardizes the stability of the local market. The deal poses challenges for Canadian suppliers and raises questions about the potential loss of jobs in the auto industry.

While Carney sees the agreement as an opportunity for Chinese companies to produce affordable electric vehicles in Canada, concerns remain about the lack of guarantees for local manufacturing. Lana Payne emphasized the need for measures to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic auto industry, including reducing investment costs in production facilities and research and development.

In response to the situation, industry officials and Ford called on the federal government to take proactive steps to support the auto sector and mitigate the impact of external tariffs. Payne stressed the importance of collective efforts to safeguard the future of the Canadian auto industry amidst increasing challenges.
