Canadian hip-hop icon Michie Mee is thrilled after receiving news from Canada Post. The renowned rapper and actress, often referred to as the pioneer of Canadian rap, will soon grace an official postage stamp. “I couldn’t believe it at first, and then I was filled with joy,” she shared in an interview with Nil KÓ§ksal from As It Happens. Michie Mee will be featured on one of three stamps dedicated to Canadian hip-hop trailblazers for Black History Month in February, alongside Maestro Fresh Wes from Toronto and the Quebec group Muzion.
According to Canada Post, each artist is being honored for their contributions to shaping the hip-hop and rap scene in Canada. Michie Mee, born in Jamaica and raised in Toronto, was recognized as one of the first to incorporate Jamaican patois into her music. Maestro Fresh Wes made history as the first Canadian MC to achieve mainstream success with his hit single “Let Your Backbone Slide,” while Muzion introduced a unique blend of French, English, and Haitian Creole in their music.
This marks the first time that Canada Post is featuring hip-hop artists on its Black History Month stamps, a tradition that started in 2009. Michie Mee, also known by her legal name Michelle Ann Camille McCullock, made her mark in the music industry during a time when Canadian hip-hop struggled for recognition and support. Despite the challenges, she emphasized the importance of perseverance and unity within the hip-hop community.
The unveiling of the Canadian hip-hop stamps is scheduled for a private event at The Concert Hall in Toronto on Jan. 27, with public availability in February. Michie Mee expressed gratitude for being selected and emphasized the significance of this recognition. As she looks forward to seeing her stamp, she embraces every aspect of herself with gratitude and excitement for the future.
Offering advice to aspiring Canadian artists, Michie Mee encouraged them to stay focused, believe in themselves, and enjoy the journey. She emphasized the importance of financial responsibility and staying true to one’s vision amidst challenges. As a trailblazer in Canadian hip-hop, Michie Mee continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations in the music industry.
